Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

The next victim in the meet the team series is the very talented, if not slightly accident prone, Jason Burnett.

Name: Jason Burnett

Role at Check Safety First: Technical Director (responsible for developing our product offering).

Sum yourself up in ten words or less

Enjoys things others find boring and loves finding technological solutions.

What one thing couldn’t you live without?

My iPhone… sad yes, but it is a tremendous piece of technology.

Favourite desert island disk?

Kitty Jay by Seth Lakeman.

Favourite holiday destination?

Sorrento in Italy. Fantastic food, friendly people, beautiful surroundings and culture.

Best holiday memory?

Taking my two boys to Disney and seeing their eyes light up when they saw the “real life” Mickey Mouse.

Holiday nightmare?

Honestly never had one… travelling for work I have had loads (hence my nickname of black spot).  For a holiday, I suppose the closest thing has been a car breakdown when travelling to a holiday in the UK in a busy stretch of road works, with 2 small children and in freezing weather - not fun!

Favourite type of holiday?

Pre-Children:  Poolside with a stack of reading material.  Post-children:  Staycation, exploring all the fantastic parts of UK that I had previously taken for granted.

Round-up of summer 2009

Friday, September 4th, 2009

So, here we are again. We have just enjoyed our last bank holiday weekend before Christmas and the summer holiday season has finished – where does the time go???

Summer 2009 will probably be best known for holidaying on a budget – staycations, nanobreaks and the August rush to find last-minute late deals in an attempt to escape the British rain.

But, what has this summer meant to you? We asked one of the big bosses at Check Safety First, Mark Harrington, to sum up his summer in 140 characters or less, Twitter style.

What was your highlight of summer 2009?

Winning the Ashes and the, now long forgotten, spell of good weather in May and June.

What was a lowlight of summer 2009?

The awful weather in July and August.

Where did you go for your holiday this year and why did you pick that destination?

I am about to go to Boston to go whale watching – very excited.

Did you take a staycation?

I am a big fan of staycations. Last year I went to Dartmouth and Cornwall. And, this year I went to the Yorkshire Dales; walking for a weekend.

Predictions for summer 2010?

I think that foreign holidays will increase in popularity again particularly all inclusive for families. As for UK weather…….who knows??

Goodbye summer, hello winter sun….

2009: the year of the minimoon

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

So far this year we have seen the term nanobreak (where holidaymakers shorten breaks away to just one night) and staycation (holidaying in the UK or at home) hit the headlines. Now, welcome the minimoon. This is where newlyweds cut down on the traditional two week luxurious break in favour of a short, more cost-conscious holiday.

This new phrase has been born out of research carried out by Hotels.com which found that over 70 per cent of newlyweds plan to go away for less than two weeks and are opting for destinations closer to home, like Turkey, Morocco and Egypt, in a bid to save some money.

Putting our romantic hat on, does it really matter where you spend your honeymoon as long as you are together? The point of this break is to spend quality time together away from the hustle and bustle of daily lives.

The one piece of advice wewould give to newlyweds deciding on their honeymoon destination, is to do your research. Look at the standard of the resort and the hygiene processes that it has in place, rather than just focusing on the cost. At the end of the day, you want a honeymoon to be a holiday to remember for all the right reasons and food poisoning is never a nice souvenir.
